We are renovating and abandoned inn and we talked to some mice living there, because we didn't want to kill them. I expect that only tame animals that regularly get fed would be interested in doing more complex things. That's their main motivation as characters. The DM has been doing a great job with it: the animals are mostly interested in food or safety. The table I'm playing at has 3 speak with animals players right now (barbarian, paladin, druid) so naturally we've been using it a lot.
